The Cosmic Photo Challenge: North, South, East, West.

Hi there, I hope you had a good weekend, we’re here to ease you into Monday with The Cosmic Photo Challenge. This week we take you on a whistle stop tour of all points of the compass, with the prompt; North, South, East, West.

This gave pretty free rein in subject matter selection, since we simply had to be shooting in roughly the right direction each time, so for added precision I have included screenshots of my compass app in all the images.

I gave a friend a lift to Braunton yesterday and I took a few pictures over there, including a couple of North/South and East/West panoramas, one vertical, one horizontal. I captured a handsome looking spider in the garden and also got some nice star trails with a long exposure on Saturday night.

The Cosmic Photo Challenge: From the ground, up.

Where did the weekend go? It seems like Friday was only yesterday, when I gave you the prompt for The Cosmic Photo Challenge this week; From the ground, up.

I took the literal route, with most of my photos taken at ground level, some using a wide angle, one with a timer.

The Cosmic Photo Challenge: A summer walk in the sunshine.

Well, it’s Monday again, but at least here on The Cosmic Photo Challenge we have a weekend of sunny pictures to look back on, as the prompt was to take; A summer walk in the sunshine.

I chose to take my stroll in the woods at Venn Quarries, as it was really hot on Saturday and the dappled shade cast by the trees was a welcome relief from the early afternoon glare.

I like the fact I could only work out what was going on here, from the stone at the bottom of the picture.

On Friday I set you the task of finding images for this week’s Cosmic Photo Challenge which would satisfy the prompt; Nature in black and white.

I chose half a dozen shots from the ones I took on an early Saturday morning drive, in the countryside just outside Barnstaple.

Hello wherever you are and welcome to another Monday edition of The Cosmic Photo Challenge, which is brought to you this week by the prompt; Country landscapes.

As I was rudely awakened at 6am on Saturday, by our antisocial upstairs neighbours having one of their early morning screaming matches, I thought I may as well make the most of it. So I drove up onto Exmoor and captured the start of another glorious day in the Devon countryside.

The Cosmic Photo Challenge: Public art.

For your mission on The Cosmic Photo Challenge this week, I asked you to go in search of; Public art.

I gambled on the weather being nice on Sunday and was rewarded, after a drizzly start, with glorious sunshine in which to once again explore Broomhill Sculpture Gardens.

You may remember previous posts from this fantastical, artistical, woodland wonderland, to which I love to periodically return, watching it evolve. I can’t possibly fit all the photos I took yesterday in this post, so watch out for the full set on another blog not too far away, coming soon.

The Cosmic Photo Challenge: Three views from one spot.

Welcome to an Easter bank holiday edition of The Cosmic Photo Challenge, this week themed around my last minute prompt idea; Three views from one spot.

I chose to climb one particular hill overlooking Barnstaple to take my trio of pictures, as it currently has a bright yellow coating of rapeseed flowers. In fact I took two sets while I was up there, the first three of which make up one composite image.

This complete 360° view is created by carefully overlapping three panoramic shots, taken in different directions from the same vantage point.

The second set of three were taken further up the track towards that phone mast in the distance, once again all captured while standing on one spot.

Hmm, I wonder what happens when you take a panoramic shot vertically…

The Cosmic Photo Challenge: As the world warms up.

Good morning, on this Monday’s edition of The Cosmic Photo Challenge, we’re having a photographic roundup of how it looks; As the world warms up.

I wasn’t (necessarily) looking for photos of impending climate catastrophe with this week’s theme, although you can, as always, spin the prompt however you like.

I was inspired simply by the weather brightening up over the weekend and, for a couple of hours each day at least, you could actually imagine you felt the promise of summer warmth on your face.

I took a drive up into the hills between Barnstaple and Bideford, the land of the wind turbines and solar farms, where I discovered what happens to that blades in a panoramic shot if it’s taken while the turbine is revolving…

The Cosmic Photo Challenge: Art from nature.

Yes, I’m afraid it’s Monday again, but don’t let the start of the week get you down, The Cosmic Photo Challenge is here to brighten your day.

This week the prompt gives free reign for your creative imagination to take flight, as we consider the possibilities of; Art from nature.

I chose the literal path and made three artistic images from recent photos, since the weather refused to cooperate with outdoor photographic pursuits over the weekend.

The first of two reimaginings of the Devon countryside is especially effective if you are viewing it on a phone or tablet, as it comprises multiple landscapes from different angles…

…and the second is a kind of photographic trompe l’oeil, combining elements of four different locations to create the illusion of a fifth.

The Cosmic Photo Challenge: First hints of Spring.

Good morning, I hope you all had a lovely weekend and are as keen as I am to see what delights await us in this week’s edition of The Cosmic Photo Challenge.

I set the prompt with the vague idea of capturing some brightly nodding daffodils or maybe some wild flowers in the hedgerow, but I ended up going with more of a big picture view of; First hints of Spring.

Apart from the magnolia starting to bloom outside our house, these were all taken on the edge of Exmoor on Saturday afternoon, when you could actually feel warmth from the sunshine for a change.
