The Cosmic Photo Challenge: In town.

Hello, it’s a new week and a new edition of The Cosmic Photo Challenge, which today focuses on pictures taken; In town.

I went into town on Saturday and thought I’d capture some of the larger old buildings in Barnstaple. The problem is, it’s often difficult to get further away than just across the street, so I decided to use a wide angle for all my shots, adding a bit of extra drama.

How did your urban exploration go? Let’s have a look at what you found…

The Cosmic Photo Challenge: Portals.

Hooray, it’s Monday! Not your usual response to the start of the week? Well maybe that’s because you haven’t had The Cosmic Photo Challenge to brighten your day.

Today we’re taking a look at those entries, exits and throughways which could be described as; Portals.

I was in town on Saturday, in the glorious sunshine, where I captured a baker’s dozen of doors, windows, gates and arcades, including a portal to a world of musical discoveries; the wonderful Discovery Records, run by local legend, Matt “the hat” Poulton.

What exciting entrances did you find for us at the weekend..?

The Cosmic Photo Challenge: Old buildings.

Good morning, welcome to another week, bringing the ever reliable Monday highlight of The Cosmic Photo Challenge to brighten your day.

This week’s theme was simple and to the point, requiring you to provide pictures of; Old buildings.

I was in Sussex at the weekend and I took a walk around the village of Rotherfield, with its distinctive red brick and tile fronted houses. The church dates back to 1060 and there is a yew tree in the graveyard which is purported to be a thousand years older than that and is now supported by props and chains.

I also paid a visit to my all time favourite pub, my old local in Crowborough, The Wheatsheaf, first licensed as a public house in 1853 and still going strong.

So, over to you, what aging architectural offerings do you have for us..?

The Cosmic Photo Challenge: Interesting buildings.

Hooray, it’s Monday again!

Why so pleased to start the week, I hear you ask. Well, because it means it’s The Cosmic Photo Challenge of course, today based on the prompt; Interesting buildings.

I have to admit the theme of this week’s challenge came to me at five o’clock on Friday morning, an hour into the four and a half hour drive to central London from Devon.

We had to travel to the American Embassy in Nine Elms, which is surrounded by the luxury high-rise, Thames-side apartments of Embassy Gardens, for a one hour passport renewal appointment, before driving the 250 miles back home.

Fortunately it was a lovely sunny day and the architecture was at its sparkly best. The Embassy itself, with its sculptural facade and two apartment blocks with an extraordinary glass swimming pool  suspended between them, a dozen storeys high, were particularly impressive.

Inside the Embassy, looking out across London from the second floor

What structural wonders did you discover over the weekend? Come on, show us watcha got…

The Cosmic Photo Challenge: Up, down and sideways.

Good morning to all of you, from all at The Cosmic Photo Challenge, hope you had a good weekend, it’s time to start your day with a view; Up, down and sideways.

I was in town again at the weekend and realised I had the perfect opportunity to look in all those directions; from atop Barnstaple Castle mound (where the castle keep stood from the early 12th century) so here’s another short historical tour.

Looking up at the mound with a recent piece of public art mirroring its shape…

…then looking down on the town from on top…

…with a sideways panorama of the space where the castle once stood.

After that I went into the centre of town, in the old streets around the church with a crooked spire which is a local landmark when giving directions.

Looking up at the spire
Looking down butcher’s row and up at the sky (ok, that’s stretching a bit)

Ending with three more sideways shots down side streets and a covered walkway on the side of the library

What did your three different directions result in this week?

The Cosmic Photo Challenge: Life in black and white.

Hello again and welcome to the week. Monday is the day we aggregate the creative contributions from around the world to The Cosmic Photo Challenge, which today means looking at; Life in black and white.

I took a walk through Barnstaple yesterday afternoon and chose some of the more…utilitarian parts of town, to capture in frozen moments of monochrome.

Now let’s see what your world looks like when it’s drained of colour, it’s really easy to take part.

The Cosmic Photo Challenge: From underneath.

Good morning, welcome to Monday and to this week’s edition of The Cosmic Photo Challenge, which today is themed around the prompt; From underneath.

We had a long wait at Heathrow on Saturday as my daughter, Audrey, was off to America for a month on her own.

While I waited and drank monstrously expensive coffee, I captured some of the airport architecture.

Here’s a shot from under the trees, which are also underneath a glass canopy; giant hanging sculptures in the departure hall; some creative lighting installations surrounding a ceiling fan; an interesting view from the mirrored roof of a lift and the view through the glass wall.

What did you look up at this weekend?

The Cosmic Photo Challenge: Three shots from one spot.

Another blink-and-you-miss-it weekend gone and another interminable week stretches ahead of us, but not before The Cosmic Photo Challenge brightens our Monday, hooray!

Today we’re revisiting a theme I find useful, because it’s one that makes you think more carefully about picking your vantage point, when you’re taking; Three shots from one spot.

I have a trio of triptychs for you, all taken yesterday on a stroll along the river into Barnstaple. I was originally going to post the shots individually, but I like the way the three perspectives fit next to each other.

How did your search for sets of three go? Check out the simple steps below, then you’ll be in the know and can have a go…

BONUS CONTENT: Here’s a warped video tour of my walk, accompanied by some equally wonky noises…

The Cosmic Photo Challenge: The view through…

Welcome to a May Day bank holiday edition of The Cosmic Photo Challenge, which this week is framed by; The view through…

Lots of room for interpretation in that prompt, so I went for a walk and captured views through (or between, or from under) a couple of bridges and an electricity pylon.

Where did your weekend search for inspiration take you..?

The Cosmic Photo Challenge: Art for art’s sake.

It’s Monday again and time to get creative for The Cosmic Photo Challenge, because this week’s theme is; Art for art’s sake.

I always enjoy a bit of mucking about, so I spent a couple of very pleasant, zen-like hours yesterday, making this single composite image.

Where did your artistic muse take you at the weekend?
