The Cosmic Photo Challenge: A new start.

We’re properly into the new year now and The Cosmic Photo Challenge is back to take its place in your Monday schedule, with the prompt; A new start.

A straightforward one from me this week, which meets the brief perfectly, nonetheless.

At work we spent the last two weeks before the Christmas break moving our entire operation into larger premises and started anew in our improved environment last week.

So now when I come in to work, instead of seeing this every morning…

…and then taking half of it out into the car park, just so I have room to move; I now see this cavernous space.

A definite improvement, I’m sure you’ll agree and this sunset at the end of last week made for a fine new start to this year’s challenges.

The Cosmic Photo Challenge: Show us your Christmas.

Hello there, I hope your festivities went as planned and you all had a lovely day. As usual we are celebrating Christmas today instead, because Rhonda had a twelve hour shift yesterday, so we’ve just bumped everything up a day.

As a result, I don’t have any “action shots” of Christmas happening, so to speak, but I do have a lot of photos, nonetheless.

I went for a Christmas Eve walk at Watersmeet, which is the National Trust property near Lynton and Lynmouth, an area  the Victorians described as “little Switzerland”.

I took so many, most of them form a special post on my other blog which you can peruse HERE, but here’s just a small selection to whet your appetite for the spectacular scenery of Exmoor.

Please go and check out the remaining photos, it really is a beautiful place.

Once again, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all of you, I look forward to more of your fabulous photos in 2023.

The Cosmic Photo Challenge: Lights, camera, Christmas!

This week’s theme on The Cosmic Photo Challenge is all about the start of the month’s festivities, namely the tradition of yuletide illuminations, so it’s; Lights, camera, Christmas!

I took a walk round Barnstaple yesterday evening, after all the shoppers had retired for the night, to capture the first of the seasonal displays.

Oh, and here’s our tree, which Rhonda spent the afternoon decorating in her usual classic style.

The Cosmic Photo Challenge: Art for art’s sake.

This week on The Cosmic Photo Challenge we’re getting creative, with the theme; Art for art’s sake.

My avantgarde extravaganza was inspired by this fern fossil we found in a slab of sandstone in the garden.

I’d recently managed to remove a larger section of the top layer of stone, revealing more of the pristine patterns beneath and this photo became the basis for a composition made up of (I think) 19 separate images.

I didn’t have the opportunity to capture anything sinister, so I went for a walk in the rainy woods and messed about with the results in various unsettling ways.

I set the theme of today’s Cosmic Photo Challenge on Friday, thinking it was just the right time of year for all sorts of attractive and interesting formations In the clouds, but it was not to be.

There wasn’t a cloud in the sky all day on Saturday and yesterday it was dull, grey and overcast.

So I did some mucking about instead.

The Cosmic Photo Challenge: A change in the weather.

There’s a touch of irony in my photos for The Cosmic Photo Challenge today, having set the theme as; A change in the weather.

After a week of blustery rain and plummeting temperatures, the weather had turned warm and sunny by the time I got out in the countryside to take some pictures yesterday, where I also conducted some interesting experiments with wind turbines.

I used a long exposure to shoot multiple rotations; a nice effect is a composite shadow of the main tower, made as parts of it are thrown on the backs of each blade at different points in their arc.

Even more strangely, using another exposure setting, I managed to capture just that shadow, suspended in thin air, without the blades it was cast on. (Zoom in on the top of the turbine, it’s a very peculiar effect against the sky)
