The Cosmic Photo Challenge: Fun in the sun.

Hello there, welcome to The Cosmic Photo Challenge, I hope you’ve all had a lovely break and the weather where you are was suitable for some; Fun in the sun.

I had Melody and Daisy the dog staying over the weekend; we visited a food festival in Bideford on Saturday and went for a stroll through Venn Quarry Woods yesterday, where there was a bit of a canine theme…

Where did you find sunny fun this week..?

The Cosmic Photo Challenge: It’s Spring!

This week on The Cosmic Photo Challenge we’re finally celebrating the arrival of a new season, because; It’s Spring!

I thought I was being hopelessly optimistic when I mentioned “sunshine photos” in Friday’s post, but yesterday was nice enough to sit out in the garden all day. I got out and about while the world was having a Sunday lie-in and captured that unique morning light.

The Cosmic Photo Challenge: One winter’s morning.

For today on The Cosmic Photo Challenge, I asked you to provide images to convey the prompt; One winter’s morning.

I was too late to capture the start of the day on Saturday, despite being up at 6 to take Rhonda to work, as I always avoid the morning rush at Tesco by doing the weekly shop on the way home. But the forecast for Sunday was dry and cold again, so I reckoned I could risk the wait.

Anyway, yesterday morning I watched the sky lighten and as soon as the first strands of orange clouds began to appear, I jumped in the car and drove out into the countryside around Landkey, just outside Barnstaple.

When I stopped the car the first time I saw this…

…and thought “Ohh, that’s quite impressive, I like that.”

Then, over the next ten minutes or so, this happened.

As they say; right place, right time.

I hope your weekend was equally successful, let’s see what you have for us this week…

The Cosmic Photo Challenge: The best of ’22.

Only two more prompts for The Cosmic Photo Challenge to go this year, so I thought it was time for us to review; The best of ’22.

So it’s time to blow our own trumpets, showcase our best bits, play favourites and glow with inner pride as we look back at some of the images we were especially pleased with over the last twelve months.

These could be photos you’ve already shared as part of the challenge, or maybe you’ve never taken part before and have hundreds to choose from!

Maybe you didn’t have room in previous challenges or you just have pictures from this year which deserve our attention, well then now’s your chance to shine.

My personal criteria for inclusion of my images in today’s post was more…esoteric, shall we say, in that mine were chosen as part of the creative process known technically as “mucking about”.

Here is my artistic representation of my photographic year, 2022

16 images were used to create this collage, how many can you spot?

What were your finest moments this year?

Come on, don’t be shy…

The Cosmic Photo Challenge: A change in the weather.

There’s a touch of irony in my photos for The Cosmic Photo Challenge today, having set the theme as; A change in the weather.

After a week of blustery rain and plummeting temperatures, the weather had turned warm and sunny by the time I got out in the countryside to take some pictures yesterday, where I also conducted some interesting experiments with wind turbines.

I used a long exposure to shoot multiple rotations; a nice effect is a composite shadow of the main tower, made as parts of it are thrown on the backs of each blade at different points in their arc.

Even more strangely, using another exposure setting, I managed to capture just that shadow, suspended in thin air, without the blades it was cast on. (Zoom in on the top of the turbine, it’s a very peculiar effect against the sky)

In which direction did your weekend weather change?

The Cosmic Photo Challenge: As summer fades.

I was fully expecting a weekend of dreary weather, as per the forecast, hence the theme on The Cosmic Photo Challenge this week being based on the prompt; As summer fades.

But nature confounded satellite technology once again, with very pleasant weather on both days, including this fabulous Exmoor sunrise, from early yesterday morning after taking Rhonda to work.

Maybe there’s hope for summer, yet.

How did your mission to capture the changing seasons go?

The Cosmic Photo Challenge: In the morning light.

The march of time brings another weekend to an end, but it also brings with it The Cosmic Photo Challenge, this week themed around the prompt; In the morning light.

The forecasters were spot on with the weather, predicting the scorching temperatures which baked the UK right the way through last week, so I was glad for the chance to grab my photos early, before retreating to find what shade I could in the garden.

I captured my images on the drive back from taking Rhonda to work on Saturday, stopping in the village of Swimbridge (birth place of the very first Jack Russell terrier) for a wander round the churchyard.

What did you find on your early start at the weekend?

The Cosmic Photo Challenge: Summer collage.

Hello again, I hope you all had a pleasant weekend, even if it was as grey and damp as mine. But even when skies are grey, The Cosmic Photo Challenge is here to brighten your Monday, whatever the weather.

Today our theme is Summer collage, because editing is just as much of an art form as photography in its way.

So, I took this panoramic shot on the road to Fremington Quay last week…

…and I added parts of 10 other photos to it, from places I’ve visited this summer, to create this landscape of the imagination.

What did you concoct for us this week?

The Cosmic Photo Challenge: Birds and bees and bugs and fleas.

Whew, that was a hot weekend and it’s due to get hotter, so I hope you’re staying safe and keeping hydrated.

What’s hot right now is The Cosmic Photo Challenge, which this week is concentrating its collective global lens on; Birds and bees and bugs and fleas.

Or, to put it another way, anything with more than four legs, and/or wings.

Even the bees seemed too tired to fly, although we did experience the joy of “flying-ant day” on Saturday, when hundreds of the little pests sprout wings and vacate the nest in search of more desirable accommodation.

At work, we’ve had the daily entertainment of watching herring gull chicks fledging from their nests on the roof; here’s one of the first to make the perilous drop, who has been named “Steve”…

…and here’s one of his parents, being unusually reticent at taking food from strangers, namely some of my coffee break muffin.

I should add that, five minutes after he’d graciously accepted my home cooked muffin, I turned my back for literally ten seconds and the little bastard stole my bagel.

Hence this photo of him and a friend, noisily registering their displeasure as I refused to part with any the following day.

They’re becoming so used to having us around, there was even one waiting at the door when I got to work the other day.

Yesterday I took a walk along the Tarka Trail at Wrafton to the wildfowl reserve, where there were 8 fluffy grey cygnets lazily paddling about in the stifling heat, along with some equally lacklustre ducks.

Now it’s time to see the fruits of your photographic labours of love, show us whatcha got…

The Cosmic Photo Challenge: A summer walk in the sunshine.

Well, it’s Monday again, but at least here on The Cosmic Photo Challenge we have a weekend of sunny pictures to look back on, as the prompt was to take; A summer walk in the sunshine.

I chose to take my stroll in the woods at Venn Quarries, as it was really hot on Saturday and the dappled shade cast by the trees was a welcome relief from the early afternoon glare.

Here’s a small selection from all the photos I took, you can see the rest HERE

I like the fact I could only work out what was going on here, from the stone at the bottom of the picture.

How was your balmy weekend walk? Do share your pictures with us, it’s so easy to do…
